Tigers still eyeing district title

THRALL — With three games remaining on their schedule, the Thrall Tigers (18-7-1 overall, 11-2 District 27-2A) have clinched a playoff spot. But, they still have unfinished business. One of their season-opening goals was a district title.

They are currently chasing long-time rival Thorndale (22-1-1, 12-1) in a race for that feat.

Thrall picked up a pair of 10-0 wins over the weekend to remain one game back of the Bulldogs. On Friday they took down Holland to complete the season sweep of the Hornets. The Tigers knocked out 10 hits, led by Weston Smiley and Jayden Rodriguez who each had two hits.

Meanwhile, Maverick McAllister handcuffed the Holland line-up, holding the Hornets to just five hits through seven innings of work.

He also struck out five for the Tigers.

On Saturday, it was Bremond’s turn to fall to the Tigers. Thrall made the most of five hits, and a six-run third inning propelled them to the 10-0 win. Thrall was able to utilize their bench against Bremond with most of the roster seeing at least one atbat.

Saturday’s shutout ran Thrall’s shut-out innings to 21 straight.

The Tigers also shutout Granger 8-0 last Tuesday to start the streak. Thrall hasn’t surrendered a run since the Tigers’ 5-1 loss to Thorndale on April 5.

The Tigers have games with Bartlett, Chilton, and Rosebud-Lott remaining. Thorndale has Rosebud-Lott, Holland, and Bremond remaining. The Tigers need to win out and the Bulldogs have to drop at least one of their remaining games for the Thrall to gain at least a first-place tie. Thrall won the first match-up with Thorndale, so if the two teams end the season tied, a playoff game would be needed to determine the top two playoff seedings.
