Oct. 19 new date for movie in the park
Inclement weather last Friday forced the postponement of the final movie in the park showing for this year, but a new date has been set – Oct. 19.
The movie is still slated for Robinson Park near the pool, and plans are to use the pavilion this time in the case of rain. Parks Superintendent Mike De Vito said the movie will also begin earlier – probably around 8 p.m. – because it is now getting darker earlier in the evening.
Taylor brought back its Movies in the Park program in July, showing Happy Feet 2 in Heritage Square Park downtown. A second movie was shown in Murphy Park and the final showing for 2012 will be at Robinson Park.
Showing the movies at different locations was an effort to showcase different parks.
“We want to try and get some exposure to the different parks we have,” De Vito said. “People always talk about the sports complex and Murphy Park, but we want to try and expose people to every park we have.”
The opportunity to bring people out for a free social event and show off part of the city were the driving factors in the decision.
“I think it brings a sense of community,” said Assistant City Manager Jeff Straub. People are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs, as well as mosquito repellent and a flashlight.
Bathrooms will be open for the showing, and free popcorn will be available while supplies last.
“From my standpoint, that is what recreation is,” De Vito said. “We are here to provide services to the residents that are more than just offering a playground or basketball court. This is our opportunity to give more to the community, and that is our purpose.”
