The Hutto Hippos varsity football team will travel to face the San Marcos Rattlers on Friday, Aug. 29, at 7:30 p.m. at San Marcos High School. The Hippos are looking to repeat last year’s opener when they rolled past the Rattlers, 63-8.
First-year head coach Eli Reinhart will debut a new offense that features plenty of returning talent. Senior quarterback Kaden Stefek, junior wide receiver Jaden Fields and senior running back Keilan Chavies all played key roles in leading the offense last season.
Chavies will run behind a veteran offensive line that returns most of its starters, giving Hutto the chance to establish a balanced attack against San Marcos.
On defense, the Hippos aim to improve after allowing more than 30 points per game last year. Senior linebacker Brayden Daniel and senior safety Carlos Sorto return to anchor the unit, while Fields is expected to see more time in the secondary.
San Marcos enters the season looking to snap a 12-game losing streak after finishing 0-10 in 2024. The Rattlers will try to spoil Reinhart’s debut, while the Hippos hope to use the opener as a tune-up before facing tougher competition ahead.
