The Taylor Police Department is inviting neighbors Oct. 7 to join forces with thousands of other communities nationwide as part of National
Night Out. The crime- and drugprevention awareness event next Tuesday is sponsored locally by the city and the Police Department. National Night Out is designed to strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and generate support and participation in local anticrime efforts, officials said.
According to a news release, residents beginning at 6 p.m. are asked to turn on their front porch lights and spend the evening with neighbors, police, City Council members, firefighters and many others.
Neighborhoods across town will host a variety of special events including block parties, cookout and visits from the police and municipal officials.
Dignitaries, along with law officers and firefighters, will disperse to the host venues, officials said.

The event started in 1984 in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania — a Philadelphia suburb — and today is observed by millions in all 50 states. Matt Peskin created the event and was also the founder in 1981 of National Association of Town Watch.
