Uptick seen in Hutto students’ scores

News comes on the heels of C rating by state

HUTTO — Elementary students’ scores are rising, which is an encouraging sign after the Hutto Independent School District received a C rating from the Texas Education Agency for the 2025 school year, trustees heard.

That was the message shared with the school board during a Sept. 25 session, as well as an update on the $522 million bond voters approved in 2023.

Regarding ratings, a lot of work remains to support the district’s secondary students, but better results from elementary education scores are a positive trend, said Brittany Swanson, associate superintendent of instruction and innovation.

“With their scores going up so much, what we would expect is as those kids matriculate into middle school and high school that work is going to pay out in dividends,” Swanson told trustees.

She noted the district has been “on pause” with accountability ratings for the past few years.

Hutto ISD did not have 2023 or 2024 ratings because of a delay due to legal proceedings against TEA and its change in accountability scoring systems.

Hutto was one of the 100 school districts that filed suit against TEA.

However, a legal ruling allowed the state agency to release 2023 scores in April and 2024 scores were released last month along with the 2025 ratings.

“For this current school year, we’re still moving forward under this accountability system,” Swanson said.

She added parents can review their students’ test scores and data at txschools.gov.

In other news, Casey Sledge of Sledge Engineering provided the district’s monthly bond update.

Hutto ISD has several developments in the works including construction of new buildings, renovation and maintenance projects to land acquisition.

Sledge walked trustees through slides and photos, noting the drone photos of construction on Hutto’s second high school are already out of date.

“Progress has been rapid, weather and working conditions have been in everyone’s favor,” he said.

Sledge also stressed the importance of accountability and transparency with the use of taxpayers’ bond money.

“All financial data, as well as board updates, can be viewed at the Hutto ISD bond website,” Sledge said.

That website is hipponation.org/ bond2023.

School board meetings are held in the Administration Building Board Room at 200 College St. on the fourth Thursday of every month.

The open meeting begins about 7 p.m. after the board’s closed session at 6 p.m.
