Reward increased in unsolved homicide of man, 81

The brutal slaying of an 81-year-old Taylor man three decades ago is getting a new look by law enforcement agencies, including increasing the reward by $ 6,000.

A release Tuesday noted the Taylor Police Department and the Texas Rangers are hoping new DNA evidence will shed more light on the Nov. 12, 1992, stabbing death of Raymond “Ray” Adolph Lightner.

“Over the past 33 years, investigators conducted several interviews and ruled out multiple suspects, but evidence from Lightner’s case is now being submitted for DNA analysis,” according to a release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Investigators said a home health case worker found Lightner’s body inside the victim’s home off Kimbro Street. The octogenarian had recently returned to the residence after spending time at an assisted-living center for a condition related to glaucoma.

A widower, Lightner lived alone but had many friends and family members in Taylor and Austin with whom he kept in regular contact, police said.

Before his death, Lightner often played dominoes at a local lounge near his home.

Police and the Rangers “believe members of the community have information that could help them find Lightner’s killer and they are asking anyone with information to come forward,” the release noted.

Witnesses can call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-252-TIPS or submit a tip at www.p3tips. com/tipform.aspx?ID=650 and select “Cold Cases Featured” and “Cold Case” in the type of crime and offense type sections.

The Texas Ranger Unsolved Crimes Investigation Program was created to assist Texas law enforcement agencies in probing unsolved homicides, like Lightner’s, or violent serial crimes.

“Investigators will pursue these cases until they reach a successful resolution or until no viable leads remain,” the release said. “There is no statute of limitations for murder offenses.” The increased reward will stay in effect for a limited time, investigators said.
