Snell draws Democrat opposition in electtion Party primaries shaping up

GEORGETOWN — Filing deadlines closed Monday for the March 3 party primaries and several area politicians drew opponents.

Steven Snell, a former educator and Republican appointed as Williamson County judge last April, faces at least one challenger.

Though no one in the GOP emerged to contest Snell, Democrat Heather Jefts will run unopposed for her party’s nomination in March and thus will face Snell in the Nov. 3 midterm election.

Meanwhile, five Democrats unopposed in their primary will be running for Williamson County offices in the November contest – county clerk, county treasurer, Precinct 4 commissioner, Precinct 1 justice of the peace and Williamson County Democrat Party chair.

Facing no challenger, each candidate will accept the party’s nomination in March.

Erin Block will be the Democrat representative in the county clerk election; Republican Nancy Rister is the longtime incumbent.

Rister did not draw a GOP challenger.

Brian Walbridge will be on the Democratic ticket for county treasurer. He is running against incumbent Carole Callahan, a Republican who did not have a primary challenger at press time.

Harmon Rhea is the Democrat representative seeking the Precinct 4 commissioner’s spot. He will run against incumbent Russ Boles, who does not face a GOP opponent in the primary.

Karl Thomas “KT” Musselman, the current Precinct 1 justice of the peace, does not have a Democratic challenger. That makes Musselman, a Republican, the presumptive winner in the Nov. 3 voting.

Kim Collins Gilby is running for chairman of the Williamson County Democratic Party. Despite attempts to reach Williamson County Republican Party officials, a list of GOP candidates was not available at press time.

Leslie Booker will be the lone Democrat candidate for the 512th state District Judge slot.

Republicans Ryan Bownds and Sarah Moore are duking it out for their party’s nomination in March for the bench, with the winner facing Booker in November.

John H. Bucy III is the incumbent state representative and will not face any Democratic opposition for his party’s primary in March. At press time, Bucy did not have any Republican opposition.

Chris Jimenez will represent the Democrat Party for state representative of the 52nd District. Republican Caroline Harris Davila of Round Rock is the incumbent.

Matthias Early is the lone Democrat running for state representative of the 20th District. Republican Terry Wilson of Georgetown is the incumbent.

Early voting for the primaries is Feb. 17 to Feb. 27. Polls close at 7 p.m. March 3.
