Fireworks safety for the New Year
Around the world, different cultures and countries welcome the New Year with fireworks displays.
Williamson County is no different, but celebrants should remember fireworks are not legal within city limits or within 5,000 feet of those boundaries, officials said.
Fireworks are allowed, however, in some unincorporated areas of the county. Also, some cities are allowed to host seasonal fireworks as part of an official display under strict guidelines.
An interactive map at https://gis.wilco. org/maps/?viewer=countymap shows the fireworks-free buffer zones.
Meanwhile, the Williamson County Fire Marshal’s Office has prepared tips to keep people, pets and homes safe this holiday season:
• Never allow children to play with or light fireworks.
• Ignite fireworks outdoors away from homes, buildings, dry leaves and grass.
• Keep water or a fire extinguisher nearby.
• Always ensure there is adult supervision.
• Provide a safe, quiet space for pets to retreat.
• Be considerate of neighbors.
• Dispose of used fireworks by soaking them with water and placing them in a metal trash can away from buildings or combustible materials until the next day.
