Former Hippo standout transfers to Jayhawks

Former Hutto High School standout linebacker Landyn Watson announced his decision to transfer from the University of Kentucky to the University of Kansas on Jan. 4, continuing his collegiate football career after entering the transfer portal on Dec. 4.

The move marks the third transfer of Watson’s college career. A member of the 2020 recruiting class, Watson is a redshirt senior.

Watson earned alldistrict honors during his high school career at Hutto and was rated the nation’s 39th-best edge linebacker out of high school by 247Sports.

He began his career at Texas Christian University, where he redshirted in 2020 and appeared in two games during the 2022 season with the Horned Frogs.

In 2023, Watson transferred to Marshall, where he spent two seasons. His most productive year came in 2024, when he recorded 65 tackles, four tackles for loss and one interception.

Watson transferred to Kentucky for the 2025 season, appearing in 12 games and totaling 21 combined tackles, including eight solo stops.

He now joins a Kansas program that averaged 28.5 points allowed per game in 2025, ranking 85th nationally. The Jayhawks are led defensively by coordinator DK McDonald, who is entering his second season in the role.

Kansas went 5-7 in 2025 under Head Coach Lance Leipold.
