COUPLAND — The city is in the initial stages of taking control of the municipal sewer system, Mayor Russell Schmidt said.

Schmidt and officials with the Coupland Water Supply Corp. recently met with the Texas Public Utilities Commission and an advisory engineer to begin transferring the sewer system from the nonprofit to the town.

“This process will take approximately a year to complete,” Schmidt said. “Initial paperwork and the request will take place soon.”

City leaders, the city attorney and the city engineer are developing a permitting system, and new subdivision and zoning ordinances.

Later this year, the town will sponsor a Coupland Clean-Up event.

Honored teacher and future events

Coach Kyle Rinderknecht has been named Teacher of the Month at Coupland School.

“Coach is always dedicated to his craft,” said Assistant Principal Kate Knapek. “Not only does he invest in the health and fitness of our kids, but also their character.”

In addition to leading physical education, athletics and sports teams, Rinderknecht has been planning the athletic program for the new Coupland Junior High and High School, set to open in August.

Coupland High School will have track and field and cross country next year.

On Feb. 3, the school celebrated “101 days of school” and students collected food and supplies for the City of Taylor, Texas Animal Shelter in Taylor. Many pupils dressed up in “One Hundred and One Dalmatians” costumes.

Allison Schulz’s science class Feb. 2 hosted special guest Louise Smyth. She taught about birds in their different environments and their survival instincts.

The school also conducted a recent science, technology, engineering, arts and math — or STEAM — evening.

“The students had so much fun at STEAM Night. Our teachers planned great activities,” Knapek said. “Special thanks to Michael Pilgrim and the Temple College STEM trailer. Also, thank you PTA for providing pizza.”

Teachers also said sixth through eighth grade pupils enjoyed a Valentine’s event Feb. 6 with dancing, snacks and drinks.

Future events include the Junior High and High School registration night March 4, the Middle School Art Show March 9, Spring Break March 16-20, and State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness testing in April.

St. Peter’s Church of Coupland

The St. Peter’s Ladies’ Circle hosted a Valentine’s Tea Feb. 14 in the Fellowship Hall with games, prizes and lunch at St. Peter’s Church of Coupland, 108 Wathen St.

On Feb. 15, the Rev. Burt Burleson was installed as pastor.

On Sunday, Feb. 22, coffee is served at 9 a.m. and the Sunday School Lenten program will begin at 9:15 for adults and children; discussions will be based on special Lenten booklets.

The Community Senior Luncheon is 11:30 a.m. March 17, hosted by the Ladies’ Circle.

“The meal is free, but donations are appreciated,” said Cindy Alexander. “Attendees can enjoy 42 dominoes and bingo afterward. Please bring a $10 bingo prize if you are able, but that’s not necessary.”

At 7 p.m. every Monday, Prissy Rumel holds a free dance fitness class at the church open to the community.
