PORTLAND — The Taylor Lady Ducks varsity softball team went winless at the Lady Angel Tournament over the weekend.
Day One
The Lady Ducks were held scoreless in their first two games, falling to Weslaco 6-0 and Mission Veterans Memorial 7-0.
Taylor managed just one hit against Weslaco, a fourthinning double by sophomore Mia Bendure. The Lady Ducks kept it close early, trailing 3-0 heading into the fifth inning, but Weslaco added a run in the fourth and hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth to pull away.
Payton Burrow took the loss, pitching five innings and allowing six runs while striking out seven.
The Ducks found more offensive success against Veterans Memorial, tallying five hits, but could not capitalize on scoring opportunities in the later innings.
Sophomore Nellie Frausto led the team at the plate, going 2 for 3. Burrow again took the loss, pitching four innings and allowing seven runs. Taylor committed five errors in the game.
Day Two
The Ducks scored their first runs of the tournament in a 5-2 loss to Sinton to open the second day.
Senior Chandler Woodruff stole home in the second inning to cut the deficit to 3-1. Katelyn Oglesby recorded the team’s lone RBI, drawing a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning to make it 5-2.
Anaih Arroyo took the loss, pitching three innings and allowing five runs on four hits with one strikeout.
Taylor then dropped a tight pitching duel, 2-0, to Robstown. The game remained scoreless until Robstown scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-run single.
Burrow delivered her strongest outing of the tournament, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out five.
Day Three
The Ducks were unable to carry over their pitching momentum in a 12-2 loss to San Antonio Reagan to open the final day. Burrow started and allowed 12 runs in 1.1 innings.
Kennedy Pleasants recorded Taylor’s lone RBI on a sacrifice fly. The Lady Ducks’ other run scored on a passed ball in the same inning. Arroyo closed out the game and kept Reagan scoreless the rest of the way.
Taylor wrapped up the tournament with a 6-5 loss to San Antonio Churchill, surrendering a 5-0 lead built in the second inning.
Arroyo led the team with two RBIs and was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs in the final innings.
Taylor faced Killeen on Tuesday and will return to action this weekend when it hosts the Taylor Tournament.
