Donations of $1.5 million for the “Big Event” heralded by American Legion Graham D. Luhn Post 39 to fund renovations has members calling the drive a success.
The overall goal is $2 million, organizers said at the “Big Event” announcement, held Wednesday at Wildflower Cork & Brews, 108 E. Second St.
“These early commitments demonstrate the deep respect our region has for veterans and the vital role Post 39 plays in our community,” said Scott Dean, commander of Post 39. “Reaching $1.5 million at kickoff shows the strength of our partnerships and the shared belief that this renovation is long overdue.”
Veterans and their families joined civic leaders and community partners Wednesday night to launch the renovation campaign.
This multimillion-dollar project is expected to restore and modernize the Post 39 facility, 1310 Sycamore St., officials said.
One of the biggest donations came from Samsung Austin Semiconductor for $600,000.
In addition to Samsung, other top donors include the John Webhy-Ed Komandowsky Foundation, Williamson County, Samsung C&T and HDR Inc.
The renovation is expected to fix structural needs, make accessibility improvements and enhance the facility for community gatherings, among other things, officials said.
Donors can give three ways, officials said: Online through the Greater Taylor Community Foundation’s portal at volunteertaylor. givepulse. com; mail a check to the American Legion at PO Box 727, Taylor, TX 76574; or through gifts by contacting Dean at taylortxlegion39@ gmail.com.
