Coupland breaks g round for CR 460 Officials: Enhances traffic safety around new school
COUPLAND — Officials gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony this past week to kick off construction of traffic lanes on CR 460 for the town’s new Coupland Junior High and High School.
According to Williamson County officials, the goal of the improved road is to ensure safe access into and out of the school while providing better safety and mobility along CR 460.
The lanes will enhance safety around the campus, set to open for classes in August, according to school and Williamson County representatives hosting the event Feb. 26.
The $1.82 million project, funded through the voterapproved 2023 Williamson County Road bond, is expected to be completed in the fall.
The enhancements include a travel lane in each direction, a continuous 14-foot center turn lane plus rightturn lanes into the two planned driveways of the future school.
Precinct 4 Commissioner Russ Boles stressed the need for the project.
“It’s important for the county…to work hard to keep up with our roads, to try to meet the growth and the space that we need,” Boles said.
Mayor Russell Schmidt said the new roadway is needed for the town.
He also thanked Boles for his part in getting the project going.
“Neither the city nor the school thought to ask for (the road), but (Boles) had the foresight to put that in the budget. He did a great job and we’re happy,” Schmidt said.
The combined campus is slated for completion in August and its constriction is funded through a 2023 voterapproved bond.
Coupland has not had a high school since the 1940s.
Students finishing eighth grade at the current Coupland School transfer primarily to the neighboring school districts of Taylor and Thrall.
