THE CZECH IS IN THE MAIL
One activity that never really interested me was cookie decorating.
Somehow or other, my kids enjoy it. I guess that gene my mom carried passed me up and went to them.
Valentine’s Day weekend, “Gran” — as my kids call her — came to our house for a visit and she brought two tubs of frosting and a box of heart-shaped cookies for Toby, Megan and Isabella to decorate for Valentine’s Day.
It felt like the show “MasterChef Junior” was filming an episode in my dining room.
When the decorating began, Toby and Megan — 11 and 4 years old, respectively — seemed to take their tasks seriously. They each carefully crafted frosting, sprinkles or heartshaped candy onto their
cookies. Then there was Isabella, who did what any aspiring 2-year-old chef would do — whatever she pleased. Bella, as we call her, took the other tub of frosting and proceeded to dip cookies in it and lick off the frosting.
Needless to say, Toby and Megan were perfectly content to share their tub of frosting
with each other.
According to Toby, it’s “Sibling Code” to not eat after your fellow offspring, so the older kids did not bother messing with the container that Bella appropriated for herself.
When the dust settled, I mean when the frosting dried and the sprinkles and candy settled on the cookies, each child had their own recipe.
Toby used frosting and candy hearts covered in sprinkles to create “A Diabetic Nightmare.”
Megan put frosting, candy and sprinkles on top of heart-shaped cookies to fashion “Tender Hearts.” Bella had several cookies dipped in her tub of frosting and made “Cookies and Dip.”
The winner was … well, dear reader, why don’t you decide? Feel free to email me with your votes.
In the meantime, I hope you enjoyed this edition of “Cookiedecorating Bloopers.”
