A business specializing in space and radiation research is coming to Taylor in 2027, according to the Taylor Economic Development Corp.
Melagen Labs announced Thursday a $4.5 million economic development performance agreement with the EDC to establish a state-of-the-art radiation testing and qualification center in Taylor.
The facility will be among the first privately operated, commercial-grade gamma irradiation facilities in Texas and one of the most significant additions to U.S. radiation testing infrastructure in years, according to a news release.
Construction begins this year, with testing operations targeted to start in 2027.
The facility is the foundation for the radiation shielding platform Melagen Labs is building to serve U.S. aerospace, defense and advanced electronics industries, officials said.
Melagen Labs will be the second aerospace facility in Williamson County. Firefly Aerospace in Cedar Park built the Blue Ghost Mission 1 robotic lander for NASA.
In addition, one of the country’s largest aerospace concerns, SpaceX, has expanded its facilities in nearby Bastrop to manufacture Starlink satellites and develop in-house radio frequency chip packaging.
