Seed money encourages donations to food pantries

Feeding Your Neighbors Challenge ends April 30

Organizers behind a local nonprofit’s seed money to area food banks and charities are hoping it will kick off similar gifts from charitable givers as part of the Feeding Your Neighbors Challenge.

The Anna+Anton Olson Legacy Foundation wants to help stock food pantries and raise awareness about hunger by aiding Shepherd’s Heart and Agape food pantries in Taylor, the Hutto Resource Center and The Caring Place in Georgetown, sponsors said.

The foundation started the initiative by providing $5,000 grants to each of the four food partners.

That seed funding is intended to spark “public generosity” and mobilize additional community support through April, when the challenge ends, organizers said.

The goal is to increase financial and food donations prior to the summer when many students lose access to consistent meals, officials said.

“This challenge is about neighbors helping neighbors,” said Larry Olson, founder of the foundation. “By providing seed funding to our food pantry partners, we hope to inspire the broader community to match or exceed our investment. Together, we can prepare for increased summer demand and ensure that children and families have reliable access to nutritious food.”

The foundation honors Olson’s grandparents, Anna and Anton Olson, Swedish immigrants who settled on a farm outside Taylor in 1916.
