Injuries suffered in a fall killed a South Korean third-party contractor in an accident at Samsung Austin Semiconductor in February, authorities revealed this week.
Wonjang Jung, 53, was working on ventilation and cooling systems at the hightech campus Feb. 11 when the tragedy occurred, a company representative said Thursday.
At the time of the incident, officials declined to release details of the accident and the victim’s name pending notification of family and an investigation.
The Williamson County Death Investigation Office released Jung’s name Thursday afternoon.
Officials also noted the Occupational Safety and Health Administration launched a probe, which is routine in many industrial workplace accidents.
A check with OSHA indicates the federal investigation is still open.
Samsung and community emergency responders, including Taylor police and fire departments, arrived quickly Feb. 11, according to Samsung spokeswoman Michele Glaze.
“Safety is our highest priority, and we are committed to understanding the circumstances surrounding this incident. We will continue to provide support to our employees and the broader workplace community,” Glaze said.
The South Korean tech giant announced in November 2021 a chipmaking foundry with an initial investment of $17 billion was coming to Taylor. Expected to employ 1,500 to 1,800 full-time workers, the plant at 1530 FM 973 is preparing to go online this year, officials said.
At different periods of construction, thousands of contract workers have been laboring at the site to get it ready, officials added.
