Enrollment numbers hold steady
GRANGER – An exchange of seats took place on the school-board dais as two Granger Independent School District trustees stepped down and two newly elected members stepped up.
Also, as Texas sees an overall decline in public-school enrollment, Granger ISD officials said they are focusing on student retention but added that so far attendance is holding steady.
During the May 13 school board meeting, Jen David and Ricky Luna were sworn in as new trustees, replacing Josh Richter and Daryl Stefek.
Three trustees were on the May 2 ballot. Incumbent Jason Huf won his bid for reelection, but Richter chose not to run for his seat again.
Stefek, who served nine years on the board, lost his bid to hold onto his spot.
Superintendent Stephen Brosch thanked Richter and Stefek for their service.
“We want to recognize them and the work they’ve done,” said Brosch, who presented both with gift bags.
Trustees Jeanette Welles and Kelli Hutka retained their positions as board vice president and secretary, respectively, and Roman Ramirez was named the new school board president.
Later in the meeting, Brosch shared the district’s enrollment numbers, which currently sit at 567, an increase from last month.
Brosch noted data from Texas Commissioner of Education Mike Morath showed public school- enrollment across the state is down 76,000 students from last year.
“There are a lot of varying reasons as to why they believe that’s happening… but (in Granger) we’re growing,” Brosch said.
However, he did sound a note of caution.
While Granger’s preregistration for a program for 3-yearolds exceeded last year’s, overall enrollment in the district is slipping compared to previous cycles.
He plans to examine the reasons, he told trustees. “That’s a significant drop that affects us…We’re going to be looking closely at that,” Brosch said.
The next school board meeting is 6:30 p.m. June 17 in the board room, 300 N. Colorado St.
