GEORGETOWN — Williamson County residents have the opportunity to learn a life-saving skill today.
Williamson County EMS and the Georgetown Fire Department will host a free CPR awareness and education event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today on the north side of the Historic Williamson County Courthouse, 710 S. Main St. in Georgetown. The event is being held in recognition of CPR Awareness Week and aims to encourage residents to learn lifesaving skills that can help save a life during a cardiac emergency.
“Every day, people in Williamson County have the opportunity to be the difference between life and death for someone they love,” said Mary Edwards, assistant outreach education coordinator for Williamson County EMS. “Learning CPR is one of the most powerful things a community member can do, and we are here to make that as easy as possible.”
Community members of all ages are invited to stop by and participate in free handson CPR demonstrations led by emergency responders. No registration is required.
The event is come-and-go, allowing attendees to participate at any time between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Participants will take part in Take10 CPR training, a brief hands-only CPR lesson that takes approximately 10 minutes. Attendees will learn the basics of recognizing cardiac arrest, calling 911 and performing chest compressions until professional medical assistance arrives.
“Most out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen at home,” said Ryan Powell, community risk reduction specialist with the Georgetown Fire Department. “When you learn compression-based CPR, you aren’t just learning a skill for a stranger, you’re learning it for your spouse, your parents or your best friend.”
Hands-only CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival following sudden cardiac arrest. Williamson County EMS and Georgetown fire encourage residents to take time to learn this simple skill and share the knowledge with family members, friends and coworkers.
