HUTTO – Voters Nov. 3 will get a chance to decide the fate of the city’s proposed new justice center, including a police station.
City officials are putting the $42 million project on the ballot of the general election. If the electorate gives the proposal a green light, funding will come through a bond.
It will replace the current Hutto Police Department.
Projections call for the complex to measure 45,000 square feet. The current justice center, which was built in 2002, is 11,000 square feet.
The existing police station was constructed when Hutto's population numbered 4,327, according to officials.
The city now has more than 46,000 residents.
If the proposal passes, the cost for homeowners will be $3.82 per month or $45.83 per year for a $100,000 home during the course of 25 years.
If a home is $300,000 in value, the owner pays $137.49 per year or $11.46 per month.
City officials are hosting two open-house meetings regarding the proposed center.
The first is 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, at the Police Department, 401 Front St.
