Updated Texas hunting and fishing license requirements

Starting August 3, updated identity verification rules take effect for most Texas hunting and fishing license purchases to combat residency fraud and to support TPWD law enforcement. While current licenses remain active, 2026/27 licenses that go on sale August 15 will be subject to these new identification guidelines.

If you are a Texas resident, please note the following requirements: Primary Identification: You must present an unexpired Texas Driver’s License or Texas State Personal ID Card. Both REAL ID and non-REAL ID cards are accepted, provided they are not marked “temporary” or “Limited Term”.

Temporary / Limited Term ID: If your Texas ID is marked “temporary” or “Limited Term”, you will need to provide, in person, one of the following, in addition to your ID: Original birth certificate, original birth certificate abroad, unexpired Texas Handgun License, unexpired US Passport or passport card, or unexpired US Military ID. Online transactions are unavailable.

In-Person Purchase (Physical Presence): If you are buying your license at a local retail agent or TPWD, everyone ages 17 and older must be physically present and show valid proof of identification (Texas Driver’s License or Texas State Personal ID Card). Temporary or limited-term IDs are not accepted without additional documentation noted above.

For complete package options, bag limits, and additional details, please review the TPWD License Purchase Requirements & FAQs prior to purchasing your license.
