County OKs tax exempts
On May 17, Williamson County Commissioners Court voted to increase property tax exemptions, which should provide tax relief to residential homesteads in the county. “Williamson County has seen tremendous growth in property values this past year,” said Precinct 2 Commissioner Cynthia Long, “so it was important to the Commissioners Court that we do what we can in order to lessen the tax burden on our homeowners to combat rising home values.” Property tax exemptions for people ages 65 and older increased from $90,000 to $125,000.

HUTTO - The new chief of police in Hutto, Jeffery Yarbarough, plans to embrace the community, the people and the opportunity to strengthen law enforcement. Originally from Nacogdoches, Yarbarough believes there is a plethora of opportunity in Hutto.

Ribbon cutting, open house this week

A new grant might help the Taylor Police Department expand. On May 12, the Taylor City Council authorized completion of an application for a grant from the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program.

Virus cases uptick
Williamson County’s COVID-19 cases had the biggest jump last week since January, although current numbers still pale from the year’s start. Confirmed cases, which include past and current episodes reported to the Williamson County and Cities Health District (WCCHD), increased by 520 in the county May 10-16.

School staff eligible for stipend
Hours of work outside of the classroom will be rewarded at Taylor ISD Taylor Independent School District will give $400 stipends for employees that finished reading academies within the 2021-22 school year. Superintendent Devin Padavil informed the board of trustees of the revision to the district’s retention stipend.

The Taylor Public Library is a place to be quiet, but its director recently had plenty to shout out about what’s going with the facility. On May 9, Karen Ellis was the guest on the sixth episode of “Taylor Talk with Jason Hennington,” the Taylor Press video interview series with city of Taylor staff on Facebook.

Plan change passes
Taylor’s plan for the future has been amended amid concerns from the public and on the Taylor City Council. On Thursday, May 12, the council approved 4-1 to approve an ordinance for an amendment to the Envision Taylor Comprehensive Plan.
