SAN ANTONIO — Thrall’s Payton Gilmore and Harleigh Barrett finished as state runners- up at the UIL state tennis championships, held at the Annemarie Tennis Center in San Antonio.
The duo opened strong with a straightset win over Madison Tyndell and Jayden McConnell of Edgewood High School, 6-2, 6-0. In the quarterfinals, they advanced by defeating Vernon’s Lily Beam and Hunter Boatman, 6-4, 6-3.
Gilmore and Barrett showed resilience in the semifinals, rallying after a first-set loss to top Abraham Martinez and Vianey Garcia of Crystal City High School, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5.
In the championship match, the pair battled hard but came up just short, falling 6-7, 0-6 in the final round against Joseph Berger and Bryn Prochazka of Franklin.
