The Hutto Lady Hippos volleyball team went 4-3 in the Westwood Tournament over the weekend, improving to 4-4 on the season.
Hutto opened play with back-to-back losses to Austin Concordia Lutheran and San Antonio Pieper. Against Concordia Lutheran, the Lady Hippos claimed the first set 25-21 before dropping the next two 25-20 and 25-18.
Junior Ellie Witcher led the team with nine kills. In the following match against Pieper, Hutto fell in straight sets 25-13 and 25-16, with Witcher recording five kills and junior Lola Posley adding three.
The Lady Hippos bounced back with two victories over Taylor. In the first matchup, Hutto won 25-14 and 25-15 behind eight combined kills from sophomore Victoria Escobedo and Posley.
In the second meeting between the Lady Hippos and Lady Ducks, Hutto won in three sets, 25-23, 25-19 and 25-16, as Witcher and Escobedo combined for 22 kills.
Hutto continued its run with a four-set victory over Pflugerville. After dropping the opening set 25-22, the Lady Hippos swept the next three behind 21 combined kills from Witcher and Escobedo.
They followed with a 25-17, 25-20 sweep of Lockhart, with Witcher and Posley combining for 11 kills. The Lady Hippos closed out the tournament with a 2-1 loss to Brenham, where Witcher once again paced the offense with seven kills.
Hutto opened district play against Vista Ridge on Aug. 19 and will return to action in the Pflugerville ISD Tournament on Aug. 21-23.
