Last minute penalties and small missteps added up for the Hutto Hippos, ending in a 37-35 defeat in the final 49 seconds by the Cedar Park Timberwolves Friday, Oct. 9.
This loss echoes the last meeting between the two in 2019, where the Timberwolves hosted and took down Hutto 20-16. That defeat ended a four-game win streak.
Offensively, sophomore quarterback Micah Antoun went 21 of 31 for 476 yards and 4 passing touchdowns.
Hutto worked to maintain control at first, establishing a 21-9 lead going into halftime.
Cedar Park came back and threatened the Hippos twice in the third quarter, closing it out by scoring a touchdown with 12 seconds left and bringing the Timberwolves behind 28-23.
Senior wide-receiver Dylan Owens put Hutto up 35-23 after a catch developed to an 85-yard run early in the fourth. From there, Cedar Park would chip away at the Hippo lead until overtaking them 37-35 after a fourth down touchdown on the 1-yard line with 49 seconds left.
This defeat snaps the Hippo five game win streak, coming just one game short of matching last season’s seven game record.
Hutto is now 5-2 overall and 2-1 for district, placing them third on district rankings. The Hippos will return home to play the Leander Lions on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.
This will be the first recorded regular season meeting between the two teams.
The Lions are currently 1-5 overall and 0-2 for district, coming off a 31-3 defeat by Rouse.
