Sophomore quarterback Will Hammond helped lead Texas Tech to a 34-10 upset of No.
15 Utah on Saturday, Sept. 20. Hammond, a former Hutto Hippos standout, provided a spark off the bench after starting quarterback Behren Morton was sidelined by a hard hit in the second half.
Hammond entered with the Red Raiders holding a 10-3 lead and quickly extended it, completing 13 of 16 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns.
He opened the fourth quarter by guiding a field-goal drive to push the lead to 13-3 before Utah answered with a 4-yard rushing touchdown to cut the deficit to 13-10. Hammond responded with a 24-yard scoring strike to his running back, stretching the advantage to 20-10.
Texas Tech added a 30-yard rushing touchdown for a 27-10 cushion, and Hammond sealed the win with a pinpoint 20-yard back-shoulder throw for his second touchdown pass of the night.
Through limited playing, Hammond has thrown for 369 yards and four touchdowns with a 95.0 QB rating. The Red Raiders head into their bye week with momentum after the statement win in Salt Lake City.
