Hippos stay perfect after dramatic finish

HUTTO — The Hutto Hippos (5-1, 4-0 district) held on for a thrilling 33-31 victory over the Round Rock Dragons (3-4, 3-2 district) on Friday, Oct. 10, at Hutto High School.

The Hippos secured the win after stopping the Dragons on a twopoint conversion attempt with 51 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore wide receiver Jaiden Fields led the way with three firsthalf touchdown receptions and a pivotal fourthquarter interception.

Round Rock controlled the ball early, taking a 13-0 lead after scoring on two consecutive drives totaling 18 plays. The Dragons also recovered an onside kick to set up their second scoring drive.

Hutto’s defense struggled early against the run, and the Hippos didn’t get their first offensive possession until 1:42 remained in the opening quarter. Despite the limited opportunities, Hutto scored on all three of its first-half drives to outscore Round Rock 20-6 and take a 20-19 lead into halftime.

Senior quarterback Kaden Stefek threw three touchdown passes to Fields in the first half. Both teams turned the ball over on downs to open the third quarter before Hutto drove 50 yards, capped by a 5-yard rushing touchdown from Stefek to extend the lead to 26-19.

Round Rock answered with a touchdown, but a blocked extra point kept the score at 26-25. Senior running back Keilan Chavies added a 7-yard rushing touchdown with 9:25 remaining to make it 33-25.

The Dragons threatened late, but Fields intercepted a tipped pass with six minutes to play. Hutto drained the clock to the 2:14 mark before turning the ball over on downs at the Round Rock 39-yard line.

The Dragons capitalized with a 34-yard touchdown pass with 51 seconds left, setting up a potential game-tying two-point conversion. The pass fell incomplete, sealing the Hippos’ fifth straight win.

The victory marks Hutto’s first five-game winning streak since 2018 and its first win over Round Rock since 1929.

Hutto will look to extend its win streak traveling to Stony Point on Friday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m.
