Is it really worth it?

THE CZECH IS IN THE MAIL

Sad but true, we live in a society where bomb threats are nothing new.

On Thursday afternoon, Taylor was on standby for two hours because of such a threat at the H-E-B grocery store.

Fortunately, it was not credible.

But why would a person do such a thing? Did he or she actually think they would get away with it?

Even though no real danger emerged, the person or persons responsible will face consequences if they are caught.

This action could range from a Class B misdemeanor to a third-degree felony.

A Class B misdemeanor, if it is a terroristic threat or false alarm, could come with 180 days in jail and/or a $2,000 fine.

A Class A misdemeanor, if it is classified as a hoax, ranges from a year in jail and/or a fine of $4,000.

It also could be considered a state-jail felony, but not likely.

It would have to be a false report to a school or utility; punishments range from two years in jail to fines of $10,000.

In a worst-case scenario, the threat could be considered a third-degree felony if authorities reveal it caused widespread fear. In that case, the perpetrator could face two to 10 years in prison and/or fine not to exceed $10,000.

We had a bomb threat when I was in high school, followed by an arrest. The defendant received a jail sentence.

One of the schools covered by a newspaper where I previously worked also had a bomb threat. The person charged in that case received time behind bars.

I offer thanks to the Taylor and Round Rock police departments, Taylor Fire and Rescue and the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office for their quick response and coordinating the evacuation of the busy store.

Thanks to all for serving and protecting us on Thursday.

To the person who made the threat, why?

Do you really think you will get away with this in spite of technology such as call or email tracing?

Do you think you’re going to avoid any charges? If you end up in handcuffs, I hope you ask yourself if it was really worth it.
