Name of deceased from Samsung accident released

A South Korean man was confirmed as the deceased in an accident that took place at the Samsung Austin Semiconductor in February.

Wonjang Jung, 53, died Feb. 11 from injuries sustained from a fall. Jung was a third-party construction contractor.

Jung was working on ventilation and cooling systems at the Samsung Austin Semiconductor campus in Taylor, a company representative said.

Samsung and community emergency responders, including Taylor police and fire departments, arrived quickly and took action on Feb. 11, according to Samsung spokesperson Michele Glaze.

“Safety is our highest priority, and we are committed to understanding the circumstances surrounding this incident. We will continue to provide support to our employees and the broader workplace community,” Glaze said.

The Williamson County Death Investigation Office took charge of the investigation. The office released Jung's name Thursday afternoon.

The South Korean tech giant announced in November 2021 a chipmaking foundry with an initial investment of $17 billion was coming to Taylor. Expected to employ 1,500 to 1,800 full-time workers, the plant is preparing to go online this year, officials said.

At different periods of construction, thousands of contract workers have been laboring at the site to get it ready, officials added.
