CEDAR PARK – The Hutto Lady Hippos varsity softball team clinched a district championship in dramatic fashion, rallying for a 6-4 victory over the Vista Ridge Rangers on Friday, April 17, at Vista Ridge High School.
The title marks a significant milestone for the program, as it is Hutto’s first district championship since 2008, when the Lady Hippos competed at the Class 4A level.
Trailing 4-2 heading into the sixth inning, Hutto delivered a clutch offensive surge. Kiyoko Earle sparked the comeback with a two-run triple to tie the game, and Kaelyn Price followed with an RBI double to give the Lady Hippos their first lead of the night at 5-4.
Hutto added a key insurance run in the seventh inning when Kenna Spence launched a solo home run, extending the lead to 6-4 and providing breathing room late. Spence paced the offense, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
In the circle, Bailey Kelley earned the start and pitched 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. Molly Kreig came on in relief and shut the door, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings without allowing a hit while recording one strikeout to secure the win.
With the victory, the Lady Hippos turn their focus to postseason play, where they will host Lake Travis in a best-of-three bi-district series. Game 1 is set for Thursday, April 23, at 7 p.m., followed by Game 2 on Friday, April 24, at Lake Travis High School at 7 p.m. A third game, if necessary, will be played Sunday. Lake Travis enters the series after finishing 7-5 in district play, good for third place. The Cavaliers are led offensively by Julianna Rodriguez, who carries a .446 batting average, and Julian Beekman, who has hit six home runs this season. Rodriguez also anchors the pitching staff, posting a 2.31 ERA and serving as the team’s ace.
Hutto will look to carry its momentum from the district-clinching win into the postseason as it aims to make a deep playoff run.
