BASTROP — The Granger Lady Lions varsity softball team was shut out in a one-game area round playoff, falling 11-0 to Burton on Thursday, April 30, at Bastrop High School.
Granger’s offense struggled to generate momentum, managing just one hit in the contest, a single by Rylinn Hamby.
Defensively, the Lady Lions also had a tough outing, committing five errors that Burton capitalized on throughout the game.
Burton took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning and steadily added to its advantage. The Panthers broke the game open in the third inning, scoring five runs to extend the lead to 6-0. The inning was highlighted by a three-RBI double, along with a walk and an error that helped keep the rally alive.
It remained an uphill battle for Granger at the plate, as the Lady Lions struck out six times and struggled to find gaps when they did make contact, frequently hitting balls directly at Burton defenders.
Burton put the game out of reach in the fourth inning, plating five more runs on a pair of doubles, a single and an error to push the lead to 11-0.
Granger had an opportunity to extend the game in the bottom half of the inning but was unable to break through, resulting in a run-rule decision after five innings.
Hamby took the loss in the circle, pitching all five innings and allowing 11 runs on 10 hits while striking out one. Control proved to be an issue, as she issued six walks that led to multiple scoring opportunities for the Panthers.
Thursday’s loss was the final high school softball game for three Granger seniors. Abi Crouch, Arianna Herrera and Izzy Tavernier wore Lady Lions uniforms for the last time.
