AUSTIN – Taylor opened its season with a dominant 40-20 victory over Eastside Early College on Friday night, as wide receiver Jeremiah Caldwell hauled in four touchdown passes.
Quarterback Johnny Guzman connected with Caldwell for an 81-yard touchdown on Taylor’s opening drive, giving the Ducks an early 7-0 lead.
Following a lightning delay, the Guzman-to-Caldwell connection continued. Caldwell caught his second touchdown midway through the second quarter before breaking free for a 55-yard score on Taylor’s next possession following a fumble recovery by the Ducks’ defense, extending the lead to 21-0.
Guzman added another touchdown pass before halftime as Taylor took a commanding 27-0 lead into the break.
Caldwell caught his fourth and final touchdown of the night early in the third quarter, putting Taylor ahead 34-0.
Eastside found some offensive success in the second half, but Taylor’s early onslaught proved too much to overcome as the Ducks closed out the 40-20 victory.
The Ducks will remain on the road when they travel to face Burnet at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4.
