Music on Main features Brazilian-style tunes

The community will have an opportunity to feel the rhythm of Brazilian grooves at Music on Main Oct. 15 at Heritage Square Park.

Music on Main is a free concert series 6:308:30 p.m. held the third Thursday of the month from September to November and from March until May in downtown Taylor at 400 N. Main St.

This month, the series features Nossa Novas, led by vocalist Sonia McLaughlin.

The band blends bossa nova, samba, Tropicália, jazz, rock and tropical rhythms into something that’s uniquely their own, organizers said.

“It is a free, family- friendly event. We encourage people to bring their blankets and chairs,” said Bryan Richie, Music on Main board member.

Based out of Austin, Nossa Novas has opened for Brazilian music legend Marcos Valle.

“Come prepared with dinner or grab something from one of the vendors, then sit back, relax and take in an evening of music under the Taylor sky,” Richie said. “On particularly hot evenings, we’ve made use of the Heritage Square splash pad and there’s a nice play area on the park grounds.”

Music on Main is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Taylor bringing the community together through music at local parks and venues, officials said.

“Music on Main is a fun, joyful community event for all the people of Taylor. It brings out all ages, ethnicities, abilities and persuasions,” said Janetta McCoy, a board member with Music on Main. “People dance, children and puppy dogs run freely around the park and neighbors greet neighbors.”

In addition to music, the event features vendors with food and drinks.

McCoy said on some occasions there are free cookies and wine for guests to enjoy.

“It is the essence of Taylor’s small-town personality on display,” she added.

Richie said the event gives people a reason to come together and share a sense of community.

“From friends and neighbors to local businesses and vendors, it is a wonderful unifying experience,” he said. “It’s a low-stress, great night out that is free and supports downtown Taylor. It’s an opportunity to discover something fresh and exciting as the music is different at every event.”
