HARKER HEIGHTS — The Hutto High School varsity softball team picked up another 6A-District 12 win Friday, April 5 as the Lady Hippos defeated Harker Heights High School 9-4 on the road.

The Lady Hippos got off to a fast start in the top of the first inning with an RBI double by sophomore Kenna Spence that scored fellow sophomore Sophia McElyea. Following another RBI double by senior Hailey Leluga, junior Mia Sanchez had a run-scoring single that quickly made it 3-0.

After the host Lady Knights evened the score 3-3 in the bottom of the frame, the Lady Hippos’ offense remained hungry in the top of the second inning. With one out, McElyea came up with the bases loaded and knocked a two-run single into centerfield that scored juniors Jayda Gallegos and Makenzie Klos to make it 5-3. Hutto extended its lead to 7-3 with two outs on another two-run single hit by Leluga that scored McElyea and freshman Mia Castillo.

The Lady Hippos would later add insurance runs as Sanchez and Castillo would come home to scores on errors committed by Harker Heights.

In the circle, Hutto senior Megan Blakeney had herself a solid game with seven innings pitched, two strikeouts, only one walk issued and all four runs she allowed were unearned. Hutto (17-11 overall, 5-3 district record), under Head Coach Matthew Mullins, will return to district action Wednesday, April 10 at 7 p.m. hosting Temple High School and hit the road Friday at 7 p.m. against Copperas Cove High School.
