Hutto softball finishes season

WACO — The Hutto High School varsity softball team saw its season come to an end this week.

The Lady Hippos, who finished with a 20-15 record, made the playoffs for the first time as a 6A program.

Nevertheless, Hutto dropped two games to Mansfield Legacy in the bidistrict round of the playoffs at a neutral site at Waco Independent School District.

On Wednesday, April 24, the Lady Hippos dropped the first game of the series by one run.

During this matchup, Hutto did not allow the Broncos to record a hit. However, four walks in the bottom of the first and an error in the bottom of the second gave Mansfield Legacy the runs they needed to win the game.

In the top of the fifth, Makenna Castillo tripled to left field to drive in the Lady Hippos’ sole run of the ballgame.

Senior pitcher Elizabeth Espinose pitched all innings in the no-hitter, striking out eight Legacy batters while allowing seven walks.

The series deciding matchup saw Mansfield Legacy jumping out hot at the beginning of the Thursday, April 25, game.

Hutto’s opposition scored six in each of the first two innings, building a big lead that they would maintain and build on throughout the night.

Junior Makayla Martinez doubled on a line drive to the right fielder to score Kenna Spence in the first inning. Later in the fourth inning, junior Mia Sanchez recorded a ground ball single to score Martinez in for the final run of the Lady Hippos’ season.
