Thelma Scruggs died on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025, at the age of 89 and a half. She was born April 19, 1936, in Rockdale, Texas, to Fritz and Selma Gest, where she grew up in the Gay Hill community.
She graduated from Rockdale High School in 1954. She married Bobby Scruggs on April 27, 1957, and they were happily married for 68 years. Thelma was briefly employed at ALCOA and worked as bookkeeper, but her passion was being a teacher’s aide at Thrall ISD.
Many lives were touched by her and so many students have fond memories of her. She was a favorite customer at McVoy’s Grocery in Rockdale, earning the nickname Snow Mama from the meat market guys because she snowed them under with her meat order.
Years later, she was a regular at HEB where many still ask about her. Thelma enjoyed cooking and spoiled loved ones with their favorite meals of chicken-fried steak, chicken and dumplings, roast on Sundays, the best dressing anywhere and her famous hamburgers.
She loved attending her grandchildren’s many activities and supporting them. Thelma loved to people-watch and on trips to the casino with her husband and daughters, she would wander from machine to machine, enjoying telling us about different people she observed.
Everyone’s favorite birthday memory is waiting for the call from grandma to sing to loved ones.
Thelma, affectionately known as Corina to her loved Gest family, was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings – Alfred and Velma Gest, Antone and Beth Gest, Walter and Dolores Gest, Ruby Eiland, Leona and Nolan Bland, Hilda and Adolph McVoy and Katie and Robert Jackson - and niece Joyce Huntsman, nephew Junior Bland, great niece Brinkne Gest, great great nephew Clayton Tex Bennett and special family friend Ray Hudson.
She is survived by her loving husband Bobby Scruggs of Laneport, daughters, Susan and Eddie Boyd of Rockdale, Donna Scruggs of Rockdale and Debbie Norris of Little-River Academy. She was the best grandma to Kaycee and Michael Schilt and Asher and Ezra of Bastrop, Willie and Haley Boyd and Carson of Huntsville, Aaron and Caitlyn Norris and Blaise and Gabe of Littlefield, Waylon and Jordan Boyd and Caroline of Albany, Traye Norris and Kaidon, Kaizer, Kynlee and Kailor of Little-River Academy and Whitley Boyd of Fort Worth. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers were Willie Boyd, Aaron Norris, Waylon Boyd, Michael Schilt, Wynn Scruggs and Kory Scruggs. Honorary pallbearers were Melvin Eiland, Tim Gest and Mason Krueger.
