Taylor Mayor Dwayne Ariola has decided the city will not honor Pride Month or Pride Day with a proclamation, something the city has done each June for the past four years.
June was first designated nationally as Pride Month by a presidential proclamation in 1999. June 28 is specifically designated as Pride Day.
Since 2021, non-profit organization Taylor Pride has been hosting a music and art festival to celebrate diversity and inclusiveness during June. This year's event is scheduled for June 28 in Heritage Square from 4-10 p.m.
Organization sponsors say the event will go on. A Change.org petition launched Wednesday to have Ariola reverse his decision received almost 500 signatures within the first 24 hours.
