A fire that destroyed the original Dickey-Givens Community Center was determined to be likely caused by human activity with uncertain circumstances.
As a result, the investigation of the fire that took place Sunday, June 29, is complete. The Old Dickey-Givens Community center, 903 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., is a historical landmark in the city of Taylor and served as a gathering place for the African-American community for decades.
At 8:25 a.m. Sunday, June 29, the Taylor Fire Department responded to a fire at the scene, and Hutto Fire Department arrived for support. Although the two departments were able to get the blaze under control by 10 a.m., the structure was deemed a total loss.
In addition to Taylor and Hutto fire, the Taylor Police Department, Williamson County Fire Marshal's Office, Texas Fire Marshal's Office and Texas Parks and Wildlife assisted in the investigation. More on this story can be seen in Wednesday's E-Edition.
