HUTTO — A train-vehicle accident Wednesday morning on the city’s western outskirts claimed the life of a motorist.

The driver and lone occupant of a Toyota 4Runner was rushed to an area hospital but succumbed to “significant injuries,” according to the Department of Public Safety.

A name had not been released as of Friday.

According to authorities, the accident occurred near the intersection of U.S. 79 and CR 110 about 10 a.m. when a westbound Amtrak passenger train struck a Toyota 4Runner on the tracks.

According to Amtrak officials, 71 passengers and nine crew members were headed to Chicago. None of the people onboard suffered injuries and the train got underway by early afternoon, reports indicated.

First responders to the scene closed the right eastbound lane of 79 to investigate and perform emergency services.

In addition to DPS, the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, the Williamson County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office and the Hutto Fire Department responded to the mishap.
