Granger ISD featured in Super Bowl commercial

GRANGER — The Granger Independent School District will be in the spotlight Sunday during Super Bowl LX as part of a Spectrum commercial.

The filming involving the Granger High School football team, the Lions mascot and elementaryschool students took place in mid-December, said Athletic Director Gaston McDorman.

According to analysts, the nationally televised championship consistently attracts 100 million viewers or more.

“It’s an interesting thing to be a part of. The process is long and tedious, and it’s a completely different world than the one we live and operate in,” McDorman said. “Lots of back and forth and communication with directors and film crew trying to get things exactly how they want them. Lots of trying to corral the kids and keep them from going crazy.”

This is the second time in less than a year Granger ISD has been featured in a commercial. Academy Sports and Outdoors also had members of the football team in an ad that ran last spring.

In the latest commercial, the team appeared in several shots as well as students in a Granger Elementary School classroom.

The exposure is good for the district, McDorman said.

“I think it’s good, positive promotion of our athletic programs, school district and community as a whole. The Academy commercial was filmed at the old stadium and our community was really proud of that,” McDorman said. “This new one was filmed at our new stadium, and that’s something that also elicits a ton of pride in our community.”

He added, “It’s always really cool, and special, when a small place like Granger can be put on the big stage and people can catch a glimpse of how special this place really is.”

Shots of the Granger football team show players going through a pregame routine and interacting on the sidelines.

“(There were) some position-specific drills, some celebration shots and some clips of me giving them a postgame speech,” McDorman said.

Craig Civale, a spokesman for Charter Communications — Spectrum’s parent company — said Granger and Lockhart were primary filming locations for the commercial.

Civale oversees the Texas and Louisiana areas.

“It will be viewed by a lot of people,” Civale said. “There are scenes from the stadium, the school and scenes of the football team and mascot.”

Spectrum is a communications, broadband and cable service operating in 41 states.

The 60th Super Bowl pitting the Seattle Seahawks against the New England Patriots airs on NBC stations starting 5:30 p.m. Feb. 8.
