HUTTO – The Hutto Lady Hippos varsity softball team avenged its only district loss of the season with a 15-5 win over the Stony Point Tigers on Tuesday, March 24, at Hutto High School.
The game ended after five innings due to the run rule. Sophomore Kaelyn Price and senior M’Kayla Hicks led the way, combining to go 3-for-7 at the plate with three RBIs apiece.
The Lady Hippos struck first as Hicks delivered a two-RBI single to make it 2-0 in the first inning. However, the Tigers responded in the second with five runs as sophomore starting pitcher Bailey Kelley struggled, allowing five runs on three hits.
That would be the Tigers’ final scoring effort as Hutto took control for the remainder of the game. The Lady Hippos answered with six runs in the bottom of the inning to take an 8-5 lead. Hutto tied the game at 5-5 on an RBI single from Price and an error.
The inning continued with a fielder’s choice and a two-RBI single from junior Keyouna Harris to cap the surge.
Junior pitcher Molly Krieg came on in relief of Kelley and was dominant, allowing just one hit while striking out two.
Hutto extended its lead in the third as junior Makenna Castillo hit a two-RBI double, followed by a run on a groundout to make it 11-5. Price added an RBI single in the fourth, and Hicks drew a bases-loaded walk to push the lead to 14-5.
The Lady Hippos secured the run-rule victory in the fifth, scoring on an error to end the game early.
With the win, Hutto has now won eight consecutive district games and improves to 8-1, remaining in first place. The Lady Hippos will face Round Rock on Saturday at 1 p.m. on the road.
