HUTTO – The Hutto Hippos varsity softball team trailed 14-11 in the top of the sixth inning against San Antonio Clark on Thursday, April 30, before a weather delay suspended play until Friday.

Both offenses came out red-hot, trading blows through the early innings. Clark struck first with a grand slam in the top of the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. The Lady Hippos responded immediately, plating five runs in the bottom half to go ahead 5- 4.

Hutto took advantage of an error and got a two-run home run from senior Kenna Spence. Junior Ayanna Marquez added a two-RBI single later in the inning to cap the rally.

The Lady Hippos extended their lead in the second inning, scoring four more runs with the help of two straight errors and a two-run home run from senior M’Kayla Hicks to make it 9-4. Clark answered in the fourth inning, rallying to tie the game at 9-9. The surge included a home run, an error and two RBI singles.

Sophomore pitcher Bailey Kelly got the start for Hutto and allowed nine runs on nine hits while striking out two. Junior Molly Krieg came on in relief and surrendered six runs in 1.2 innings.

Hutto briefly regained control in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single from junior Keyouna Harris, then added another run in the fifth on an error to take an 11-9 lead.

Clark responded again in the top of the sixth, scoring five runs on a home run, two singles and an error to go back in front 14-11.

Play was then halted due to weather, with Hutto set to resume facing runners on second and third with no outs. Freshman Jenna May entered in relief of Krieg before the delay but did not record an out.

The remainder of Game 1 was completed Friday, followed by Game 2 and a third game if necessary.
