For more than five years, Samsung Austin Semiconductor college interns have volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club of East Williamson County.
During the week of July 13-17, about 100 Samsung college interns and 120 members of the club teamed up for two days of activities ranging from sports to STEM-based pursuits — science, technology, engineering and math.
According to club director Gerald Walker, Samsung has been doing this “since they announced that Taylor would be a future chip-fabrication site.”
Samsung officials in November 2021 released news the company would be building a semiconductor plant in Taylor.
“Our club members enjoy making new friends and creating lifelong memories,” Walker said.
The activities took place in the game room and outdoors. The outside recreation included baseball, volleyball and gaga ball, a kind of dodgeball played in a walled pit.
“I usually do more STEM-based volunteering, but it’s just as meaningful to get outside, do these types of activities and enjoy being a kid, which are all an important part of growing up,” said Kaitlyn Yam, a Samsung intern. “I don't know when the last time I played baseball was or if I've even played baseball.”
Walker said he is grateful for the club’s partnership with Samsung.
“In addition to the multiple donations, the fellowship and commitment to community service have been great for our club members,” Walker said.
The club is at 2500 North Drive.
The Samsung internships – which include pupils from Taylor High School -- take place both at the South Korean company’s older Austin location and the newer site in Taylor.
