HUTTO – A telephone scam has resurfaced asking people to cough up some money or go to jail, according to the Hutto Police Department.
Officers have received several reports regarding the recurring hustle.
Investigators said what makes this shakedown a little more convincing is the offenders use the names of actual judges, constables or deputies at a sheriff’s office.
The caller also tells victims they have federal warrants out for their arrests because they failed to appear for a jury summons.
According to Hutto police, “These scammers are highly convincing and are skilled at creating a sense of urgency.”
The scammers then demand a financial payment to avoid a trip to the slammer.
The Police Department suggests residents protect themselves by not providing personal or financial information and hang up.
