Hutto campus back open after shots fired report

Howard Norman Elementary School is back to normal operations after reports of shots fired at a surrounding neighborhood.

HUTTO — One Hutto Independent School District campus was temporarily closed Monday morning after reports of shots fired.

Howard Norman Elementary School entered secure status Monday, March 25, after the Hutto Police Department began investigating a tip involving the 100 block of Liard River Road, according to a district spokesperson.

“Whenever we have police activity in the neighborhood, we enact what we call a secure status,” said Noelle Newton, the district’s executive director of communications and community relations. “We bring the kids in and lock all the doors until the situation is resolved.”

Newton said the secure status lasted about 40 minutes, with normal operations resuming at 10:34 a.m.

David Amsler, Hutto’s assistant to the city manager, said Hutto PD is in an active investigation on the reports of shots fired.

“It appears to be an isolated incident,” Amsler said. “No one is injured, and there is no danger to the public.”

Hutto PD encourages anyone with information about the case to text anonymously at 847-411 with the keyword “HUTTOPD” or send a tip at www.tip411.com.
