The soul of Texas rodeo is being celebrated at a gallery opening for a photography exhibit called Soul Circuit, Juneteenth Rodeos In Texas.

The free event on June 5 begins at 5 p.m. at the McCrory Timmerman Gallery, 112 W. Second St. A guided program discussing the significance of Black rodeo culture begins at 6 p.m.

The exhibit is part of a celebration created by the Juneteenth Committee, a collaboration of The Dickey Museum and Multipurpose Center, McCrory Timmerman and the city of Taylor.

“Essentially, this is the Dickie Museum's first act as a museum. We are hosting this photography exhibition via a grant from Humanities Texas,” said Nakevia Miller, executive director of The Dickey Museum and Multipurpose Center. “We’re so grateful to them and then our gallery partner McCrory Timmerman because, you know, we're still raising money to build a new building.”

The exhibit, Soul Circuit, will be at the McCrory-Timmerman building through July 15. Photographs are displayed along the first and second floor foyers. The gallery is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

More on this story can be seen in future editions of the Taylor Press.
