HUTTO – When Jaiden Fields said, “Boomer,” Tuesday afternoon, the crowd in the Hutto High School Competition Gym replied with, “Sooner.”
Fields, an incoming senior football player at Hutto, announced Tuesday afternoon he will play college football at the University of Oklahoma in front of family, friends and coaches. Fields chose Oklahoma over Southern Methodist, Stanford, Texas A&M and Texas Christian.
“I was happy to get (this decision) over with, but was nervous at the same time,” Fields said.
A table with gloves displaying the logos of Oklahoma, SMU, Stanford, Texas A&M and TCU were on the table where Fields, his parents Harry and Kristina, and brothers Tre and Carson sat when he made the announcement. After thanking Jesus, his family, teammates, coaches and friends, Fields took his top shirt off to reveal an Oklahoma shirt.
Fields is the No. 1 utility player in the state, according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. He plays wide receiver on offense and safety on defense and will be a senior at Hutto in the fall, but Fields said the coaching staff at Oklahoma will likely have him on defense.
“I talked to the coaches, and I’ll be playing defense over there,” he said. “But I could play a little offense, too.”
Hutto was 9-3 and co-champions of District 25-6A in 2025. As a junior, Fields had a stellar campaign.
On offense, Fields caught 89 passes for 1,345 yards and 18 touchdowns. On defense, he recorded 48 tackles, recovered three fumbles and intercepted two passes.
“It’s going to be a blessing to play for Coach (Brent) Venables,” Fields said. “He’s put a lot of people in the league. I’m just excited to get to Norman and do what I do.”
Fields said in addition to the defensive prowess and tradition of Oklahoma, the atmosphere had something to do with his decision. The Sooners were 10-3 a year ago and lost in the first round of the College Football Playoff.
“The atmosphere and the area round Norman had a lot to do with my decision,” Fields said.
