BURNET — The Taylor Ducks varsity football team moved to 2-0 on the season with a 49-30 victory over the Burnet Bulldogs on Friday, Sept. 4, at Burnet High School.
Junior quarterback Johnny Guzman and sophomore athlete Jeremiah Caldwell once again led the way for the Ducks as the two connected for four touchdowns through the air.
Guzman finished the night with 190 passing yards and four touchdown passes while also adding two rushing touchdowns. Caldwell caught all four of those touchdown passes, finishing with 149 yards on eight receptions.
Through two games, Caldwell now has seven touchdown receptions.
Guzman got the scoring started with a 6-yard touchdown run to give Taylor an early 7-0 lead. Burnet answered with a touchdown to tie the game, but Guzman responded with a 12-yard touchdown run to put the Ducks back in front.
Taylor extended its lead when Guzman found Caldwell for their first touchdown connection of the night, making it 21-7.
Burnet responded with a touchdown to cut the lead to 21- 13 after missing the extra point, but the Ducks answered before halftime. Guzman scram- bled to extend the play before finding Caldwell for a 25-yard touchdown pass, giving Taylor a 28- 13 lead at halftime.
Burnet opened the second half with a field goal to cut the deficit to 28-16, but Taylor quickly regained control. Guzman connected with Caldwell on another long touchdown pass to push the lead to 35-16.
The Ducks continued to add to their lead in the second half as Caldwell caught his fourth touchdown pass of the night. Kavoni Godwin also found the end zone on a rushing touchdown as Taylor pulled away for the 49-30 victory.
Taylor will return home Friday, Sept. 11, to host Elgin at 7:30 p.m. The Wildcats enter the matchup after picking up their first win of the season with a 63-7 victory over Austin Northeast.
The Ducks will look to keep their unbeaten start going and move to 3-0 on the season against their neighboring rival.
