GEORGETOWN — Williamson County officials recently invited community members to donate shoes for a visual display honoring lives lost to suicide and the loved ones who carry their memory.
The shoe drive ran through Sept. 7 as part of the county’s observance of Suicide Awareness Month.
Community members were invited to donate new or gently used shoes of any type, size or style at any Williamson County justice of the peace office.
“Each pair (of shoes) will help illustrate the human impact of suicide and serve as a reminder that behind every statistic is a person, a family and a story,” officials said in a release.
Suicide-loss survivors were also invited to contribute a pair of shoes belonging to a loved one for the display.
“Every pair represents someone who walked through this world, someone who was loved and someone who is remembered,” event organizers said.
Memorial shoes will be “respectfully preserved” for use in future Williamson County suicide awareness and remembrance displays. The shoes will not be returned or donated after the event, planners said.
General shoe donations will be given to local charity organizations to benefit those in need, officials said.
