Granger, Thrall XC compete at district meet

CAMERON — The Granger High School and Thrall High School varsity cross country teams were in action on Saturday, Oct. 7 at the District 27-2A meet held in Cameron.

In the varsity girls’ two-mile run in a field of 35 runners, the Granger Lady Lions placed third as a team to advance to the upcoming 2A regional meet. Freshman Brooklyn Gaswint led the way for Granger in fifth place with a time of 13:27.13, while fellow freshman Eva Ramirez also cracked the top 10 in eighth place with a mark of 13:51.26. Lady Lions freshman Keeleigh Peace placed 12th with a time of 14:50.89, freshman Carli Cadena came in 13th place with a mark of 14:52.97 and senior Montana Moore came in 26th with a time of 15:57.41.

For the Thrall Tigerettes, junior Sarah Laurence had the best overall finish with area schools at the meet as her mark of 12:59.28 placed her second and made her the only Thrall runner to advance to the upcoming 2A regional meet. Tigerettes senior Avery Koonce came in 10th with a time of 14:30.26, freshman Bailey Skrhak placed 16th with a time of 15:10.00, freshman Kayla Pouncey came in 18th place with a mark of 15:21.96 and freshman Gracie Webb was 20th with a time of 15:33.07.

As for the area boys in the 5,000-meter run in a field of 40 runners, the Lions placed second as a team and had three runners place in the top 10: Granger sophomore Kye Welles in fifth place with a mark of 18:38.38, senior Lucas Matta in sixth with a time of 18:50.23 and freshman Adrian Lizardo placed seventh with a mark of 19:02.50. As for the Thrall Tigers, seniors Steven Walker and Ethan Dahl placed back-to-back as Walker came in 15th place with a time of 19:52.00 and Dahl was in 16th with a mark of 19:54.51.

The upcoming 2A Region IV cross country meet will be held on Monday, Oct. 23 at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
